Family-friendly theme park in Scotland

M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park in Motherwell, Scotland, is the largest and most famous amusement park in the country and a popular destination for families, thrill-seekers, and anyone looking for fun and entertainment. Located near the picturesque Strathclyde Country Park, this amusement park offers an impressive variety of attractions that cater to all tastes, both indoors and outdoors. The park was founded over two decades ago by traveling showmen Matthew and Douglas Taylor and has since become a staple of the Scottish leisure landscape. Despite financial setbacks, including bankruptcy in 2020, the park was taken over and continued, highlighting its importance to the region.

Indoor attractions at M&D's park

The outdoor area of the park is particularly known for its rides, which offer a wide range of experiences. Highlights include thrilling roller coasters like the "Runaway Mine Train," which twists and turns for an adrenaline rush. For thrill-seekers, there are spectacular attractions like the "Disk'O," which spins riders in the air over ten meters high, or the "Captain's Curse," a giant pirate ship that swings back and forth. Families with younger children also have plenty of options, as the park offers over 20 rides specially designed for kids, including the "Red Baron" planes, "Disco Boats," and Mini Dodgems. This variety makes M&D’s a place that combines thrills and relaxed entertainment. Another popular experience is "Moby's Revenge," a three-lane water slide with steep drops and spiral tracks, perfect for cooling off on warm days.

Adventure activities in Scotland theme park

A unique feature of the park is its extensive indoor facility, accessible year-round and providing fun even in typical Scottish rainy weather. "Amazonia" is a standout - the only tropical rainforest under a roof in Scotland. This temperature-controlled hall houses a variety of exotic animals such as capuchin monkeys, parrots, snakes, poison dart frogs, and giant centipedes, presented in an authentic jungle environment. Also indoors is "Cosmic Bowl," Scotland's first glow-in-the-dark bowling alley, offering 16 lanes and fluorescent effects for a special experience. For kids, there's "Krazy Congo," a huge soft play area with ball pits, rope bridges, and slides for hours of fun. The "Gamezone" complements the offering with over 150 modern and classic arcade games that appeal to both kids and teens.

Dining options at Scotland theme park

In addition to the rides and indoor attractions, M&D’s also offers a variety of dining options to complete the visit. Visitors can choose from various restaurants, including "The Family Restaurant" with classic dishes, "Downtown USA," a 1960s-style diner, and "Giuseppe's," an Italian café serving authentic coffee and ice cream. For upscale dining, the "Glasshouse Restaurant" in the adjacent Alona Hotel offers glass architecture and regional specialties. This variety ensures that there is something for every taste, whether looking for a quick snack or a relaxed meal.

Largest theme park in Scotland for kids

The park's history has not been without challenges. In the past, M&D’s was known for larger roller coasters like "Tornado" or "Tsunami," which were dismantled or sold due to accidents or economic decisions. The "Tsunami" accident in 2016, where several people were injured, led to a temporary closure of the ride and reinforced efforts to improve safety standards. Despite such setbacks, the park has reinvented itself and now focuses more on family-friendly attractions and year-round indoor experiences. Plans for expansions approved by the North Lanarkshire Council in 2018 show the commitment to further develop and keep the park attractive.

For families, M&D’s is particularly appealing as it offers numerous activities for children of all ages, from trampolines to adventure golf on "Devil's Island," an 18-hole course with caves and water obstacles. Seasonal events like Halloween or Christmas specials provide additional variety and regularly attract visitors. The park borders Strathclyde Loch, allowing for walks or nature excursions and enhancing its location amidst a green environment.

We booked bowling and amazonia and enjoyed both Not very accessable for me with walker, steps up to bowling, disabled toilet out of order and 4 steps to negotiate into ladies toilets, not friendly for disabled.

Lost all their big rides after lawsuit, park is run down and clear they haven’t learned anything regards safety. Clear the owners want to make as much money as possible and they don’t care about experience doubtful this park will make it to 2026.

Went for an amazonian birthday party for a kid. Experience was good but the "party room" was dreadful. No balloons no music just what looked like a makeshift store cupboard. And the food was about the same. Fried to death. Come on m&ds it's cheap and easy to do better.

Claw machines for small toys are rigged. My 6-year old daughter didn’t understand why the correctly-placed claw wasn’t picking up. Summoned an attendant who explained it was simply a lottery as to when the claw actually worked and that it was a game of chance rather than skill. Heartbreaking. Tens of pounds wasted with no return. Not going back.

Not great that the website says Amazonia opens at 10, and on arrival it appears to be 11?

Avoid. This place is so run down and dated. I doubt it meets any safety standards. I took a pram and was mostly by myself. There is one ramp and lots of small stair cases throughout so it means you can hardly access any of the site. I struggled with a pram so goodness only knows how someone in a wheelchair gets about inside. Also lock on the disabled toilet is broken so couldn’t even use that! Also, I don’t think it’s appropriate to have swear words on posters in a place that is predominantly accessed by young children. Hugely disappointed and won’t be back.
